Celebrating 6 months of homeownership!

This week marks six months of being homeowners for our family! We have accomplished so much in such a short time with a shoe string budget but still have so many more projects we want to tackle. We bought a classic little brick ranch built in the sixties with popcorn ceilings, shag carpets and drab gray interior but every day we are ripping out the old (literally – we have ripped up sooo much carpet) and breathing new life into our sweet little home. I honestly have had a blast getting to work my magic on my house and it’s strengthened my confidence muscles in my own design skills. I used to think I was pretty good at design but now I’m like “Dang girl! You are a natural!” Friends and family helping me with projects were sometimes like “….where are you going with this?” but once finished, they saw how beautiful it was once all pulled together and I learned to trust my instincts when it comes to design. Design, for me, is a highly intuitive process. I look at my canvas (AKA the room), think about how I want to feel when I’m in the space and it’s like I just have to let this other part of my brain takeover from there and trust that the outcome is going to rock. Also, I can’t continue on without giving a huge shout out to my mom and dad who have brought their house building expertise and literally helped bring my vision to life. So thanks mom and dad 🙂 Also, my sweet husband has been amazing at helping me “gut” the space; every thing from ripping out carpet, yanking up nails and board and going along with all of my design ideas. It’s a work in progress still, but I want to invite you guys along on this journey!

Of course, if I had thousands of dollars to spend and could outsource all of my work to contractors, I would make some more bold moves with the space like install skylights in the ceiling (this would allow more light in the space without sacrificing wall space – a great way to open up a small space) have hardwood floors installed in the basement and knock out a couple of walls. But since we are ballin’ on a budget and I’m doing most all of the work in my “free time”, I’m choosing to add big impact in the smallest possible ways. If you’re in your starter home with not a lot of extra cash and maybe even you don’t love the style of your home, let this be your encouragement that any space can be turned into something beautiful that reflects your style, story and ethos. Be sure to subscribe so you can see all of our rooms coming together one by one and maybe get a few ideas for your own space.
